Fluoride and Water Fluoridation

The first ordinance to provide for the addition of fluoride to the drinking water supply in Terre Haute was passed in 1958. Since then, the fluoridation of the drinking water supply continues to be a topic of interest and debate and has been revisited through the years by local and state governments. Generally, it has been determined that the presence of fluoride in drinking water, within the limits set forth by the State Board of Health, is a deterrent to tooth decay.
